Photographs by Jenny O'Connor

'My work in this exhibition was inspired by seeing Peter Black's street photography at his exhibition at the City Gallery earlier this year, just before I left New Zealand to drive across the United States on my own. During the trip I did a lot of street shots, just sitting on a footpath somewhere and clicking off shots of people walking by doing what they do and being completely unaware of being photographed.'

'The piece in this show is an extension of the same idea. I wanted to capture the build-up to the Lord of the Rings premiere in an unstructured and informal way by photographing whatever happened to be going on as I walked past the Embassy every day, to and from where I live. I just responded to what was happening at that moment rather than spend hours waiting for something or someone 'interesting' to turn up, or the light to be right and all those other things that we photographers usually worry about. I wanted to capture the ordinariness of what was building up to be an extraordinary event, hence the inclusion of the countdown numbers in every shot.'
