Peter Black began exhibiting his photographs in the late 1970s, and his first book, Fifty Photographs was published in 1982. The work was shown at the National Art Gallery in Wellington the same year, and was the first solo show by an NZ photographer at that institution. In 2003, the Wellington City Gallery hosted a major survey show of his work, and the catalogue Real Fiction (VUP, 2003) also featured writers & poets responding to the images. Peter Black has also been included in the major NZ art publications Contemporary New Zealand Photographers (Mountain View Publishing, 2005), and Into the Light (Craig Potton, 2006).

Peter Black has had over 30 years photographing in black & white and three years photographing in colour and printing his own images. His new book I loved you the moment I saw you (VUP, 2011) is a series of 82 colour photos shot (mostly) in Wellington in 2009.
