Getting inspiration: developing a body of work
The workshop will run on the weekend 14-15th April 2012
at Photospace Gallery, 37 Courtenay Place, Wellington
Note: this is a one-off workshop, limited to 10 people

that is capable of being exhibited or made into a book, working in black & white or in colour.
Topics covered:
- How to get the best from your camera
- Editing and sequencing your work
- Colour management (discussed but not demonstrated, as this is not a printing workshop)
- Preparing for an exhibition
- The photographic book
Peter Black talking on Radio NZ about his new book I loved you the moment I saw you, September 2011
Please note: some details of the following information may be updated for the April 2012 workshop.
This workshop is limited to ten people, so one-to-one attention can be given. A big part of the benefit of such a workshop is being
involved with a small group of like-minded photographers; the energy and focus that it brings, and the added social benefits.
Expect to spend at least a third of the time photographing around Wellington, with guidance. Time will be spent discussing your
individual work, both past and present.
This workshop will appeal to photographers who photograph the real world including people, buildings and landscape
(rather than studio work). The main aim is to gain inspiration.
Please apply to: James Gilberd at Photopspace Gallery - Email: j.gilberd at xtra.co.nz
or phone (04) 382 9502 (after 10am!)
With your application, if possible please submit a set of up to ten images of recent work, as these images will be discussed.
(JPEG format, up to 1MB each. Please do not exceed 10MB in a single email, or it won't get through.)
Bring to the workshop:
- Your digital SLR or a 35mm SLR to do the project work (If you want to shoot 35mm film, you will need to get prints made rapidly during the weekend. Course fee does not cover your film & processing costs.)
- If possible, a laptop computer, for downloading, processing & editing.
- A USB drive for transferring photos between computers.
- The photography book that has most influenced and inspired you.
Workshop cost:
- The total cost is 360.00 per person, including GST.
- A deposit of $100.00 is required to book a place.
- There is no catering on the workshop, although good, strong coffee will be available.

Peter Black began exhibiting his photographs in the late 1970s, and his first book, Fifty Photographs was published in 1982.
The work was shown at the National Art Gallery in Wellington the same year, and was the first solo show by an NZ photographer at that
institution. In 2003, the Wellington City Gallery hosted a major survey show of his work, and the catalogue Real Fiction (VUP, 2003)
also featured writers & poets responding to the images. Peter Black has also been included in the major NZ art publications
Contemporary New Zealand Photographers (Mountain View Publishing, 2005), and Into the Light (Craig Potton, 2006).
Peter Black has had over 30 years photographing in black & white and three years photographing in colour and printing his own images.
His new book I loved you the moment I saw you (VUP, 2011) is a series of 82 colour photos shot (mostly) in Wellington in 2009.
