This is an intermediate level course, run as a six-week course with follow-up or as component of the Photocourse 2 programme . A working knowledge of basic photographic skills and techniques is required.
The course will be tutored by John Williams and James Gilberd.
The objective of this course is to build a small portfolio of documentary/photojournalism images
and to develop a concept for a longer project. Progress on the longer project can be reviewed at the end of the PC2 course.
Camera handling technique is the technical focus of this component of PC2.
You will need either a digital SLR or film SLR camera to do the course assignments. Some 35mm film SLRs are available to
hire for the duration of the course.
Draft programme:
- Week 1: Introductions, what is documentary?
A history of documentary photography.
Assignment 1: Picture Making.
- Saturday workshop: Street photography.
- Week 2: Theoretical and ethical issues of documentary, a personal perspective. Assignment 2: Inspired By
- Week 3: Documentary DVD or video. Interet outlets.
Assignment 3: Project Proposal
- Week 4: Presentation Assignment 1. Interim review Assn 2, Ideas for Assn 3.
- Week 5: Uses of documentary, The Photo Essay, Ethics revisited.
- Week 6: Presentation of images from assignments 2 & 3.
Each participant can make timeline-based bookings for review of their long project (Assignment 3). This will be finally presented at the end of the PC2 course.
