This is an intermediate level course, run as a six-week course with follow-up or as component of the Photocourse 2 programme . A working knowledge of basic photographic skills and techniques is required.
The course will be tutored by John Williams and James Gilberd.
The objective of this course is for each participant to build a small portfolio of portrait photographs and through doing so gain a
deeper understanding of controlled lighting, both in the studio and in the environment.
Light quality and control (studio & environmental) is the technical focus of this component of PC2.
There will be an workshop day in the studio focussed on learning to light for portraiture.
You will need either a digital SLR or film SLR camera to do the course assignments. Some 35mm film SLRs are available to
hire for the duration of the course.
Draft programme:
- Week 1: Introductions, styles and approaches to portraiture.
Intro Assignment 1: The Studio Portrait.
- Saturday studio workshop - Sat 18th June, provisionally
- Week 2: Review lighting workshop, research and portrait ideas.
Planning your photo shoot.
- Saturday workshop: intro to studio lighting for protraiture.
- Week 3: Intro Assignment 2: The Environmental Portrait.
Review studio work to date.
- Week 4: Available light and on-camera/portable flash.
Assn.2 ideas and planning.
- Week 5: Interim review of images and Assn.2 progress.
- Week 6: Presentation of images for assignments 1 & 2.
Each participant will need to make at least one booking during the course for studio time with their portrait subject/s. Other participants may want to assist
on these shoots, as a studio shoot is generally a team project.
