Artist's Statement - Chris Donovan

Back to exhibition

I've been taking these nudes over a period of three years in lounges, bedrooms, bathrooms and back yards. Most images were taken with window light except occasionally I used a hand-held tungsten lamp for effect. I am interested in how this kind of light plays on bodies.

My images are other than what we normally see. I wanted to enlarge the number of images in the category of natural nudes, images with little erotic appeal but with a natural aesthetic; images not so abstract, captured using available light and surrounds. It was an adventure for me, creating this previously neglected category of images for myself.

Models were friends and acquaintances who modelled for free. Thanks to Lucie, Rosy, Jo, Kali and Sharn, for allowing me to show images of them and also to the other women whose images, while great, aren't shown in this exhibition.

This is Chris Donovan's first exhibition since graduating from
Mel Phillips' Photography School in Raumati Beach.
