CASES / INVESTIGATIONS

Inverlochy House, Te Aro, Wellington - photo: Rob Wilson

In 2006-2011 the Strange Occurrences team has conducted and participated in investigations in private houses, businesses and major public buildings in Wellington, Auckland, Waikato, Horowhenua, Hawkes Bay, Whanganui, and in Dunedin, Christchurch and Central Otago.

SPOOKED! - Exploring the Paranormal in New Zealand by Jo Davy & James Gilberd, published by Random House in August 2011, gives accounts of a number of investigations Strange Occurrences has conducted, and some of our ongoing research.

  • The Ghost of St Bathans - TV One Close Up, 31st October 2011 - James Gilberd investigates the possibly haunted Vulcan Hotel, Central Otago, on Halloween.

  • TV3 Nightline clip - 17th August 2011, Inverlochy House & Spooked book

  • TV3 News story about the Strange Occurrences investigation of the Wellington Town Hall, June 2010.

  • www.fullcodeghost.com - the site set up to document our Wellington Town Hall investigation in June 2010.

  • TV3 Nightline story of Strange Occurrences investigating two Wellington locations in September 2009. (Please ignore the silly floating things and reference to Ghostbusters :-)

  • Radio NZ Documentary of Strange Occurrences investigating Inverlochy House, Wellington, in June 2009

Please note: while the links above document a few of the more public investigations we've conducted, we do not post our investigation findings on this site. Our reports are most often kept confidential between us and our clients.

Some investigation photos and notes are posted on the Strange Occurrences Paranormal Investigation Facebook group page.
You will need to join Facebook to join the group. There are also some discussion threads on paranormal topics.

Below are some photos of us investigating several unidentified locations.

"The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and science. He who knows it not and can no longer wonder, no longer feel amazement, is as good as dead, a snuffed-out candle."

The Canvas magazine supplement of the Weekend Herald, 24th January 2009 ran an article on our investigation of Inverlochy House, Wellington, as its feature article. Thanks are due to journalist Alan Perrott who travelled down from Auckland to spend the afternoon and night with us as we worked on the investigation, along with members of Phoen-X PRI. A follow-up investigation of Inverlochy has been done and more will follow. Part of the article - actually just the sidebar - is on the NZ Herald site.

It is hard to establish what might be occurring at a site within the timeframe of a single investigation, so we are running several longer term investigations that involve repeated visits. That way we build a picture of the possible occurrences of paranormal activity in a place. Inverlochy House, The Wellington Museum of City & Sea, and Mygalaxi are some of the sites we have investigated several times.

We are not inclined to reach conclusions such as whether a location is haunted or not, as we are dealing with phenomena we so far know little about. Our investigation process is centred around collecting and compiling evidence, hard or anecdotal, rather than making proclamations. Also, we do not try to eliminate, release or "free" ghosts, although we may be able to put clients in contact with people experienced in that area.

Here are some photos taken by James during a precursory investigation of a Wellington building, mostly in the basement.

The photographs show some of the usual range of effects you get when a compact camera is used (see comments under larger photos). The camera used here was an elderly Panasonic Cybershot digital (photo below) with a tendency to turn overexposed areas magenta, and also with some cutoff on the top of the frame, which has been cropped off. (The camera has since completely died.)

I used the camera fairly casually as a note-taking device, and not with the intention of deliberately creating any anomalies. Viewing the photos later, it was quite surprising to see the range of unusual effects recorded, all in one location in about 15 minutes. I believe I have explained most of the effects - see notes under enlarged photos, especially list of points with enlarged photo of digital camera.
