Thermometers: non-contact, with laser guides (centre, and right, built into an electrical multimeter). These can take temperature readings of objects in a room or surfaces such as windows and doors, from a distance. The unit on the left is a small digital weather station.

Digital, mercury and bi-metal thermometers are used for monitoring air temperature either directly or by remote sensors. People who have witnessed ghost activity often report they feel very cold, so it is important to measure temperature of the air and of objects in a room by various methods, to be evaluated in conjunction with EMF readings, photos, video and sound recordings.

The digital weather station can monitor humidity and barometric pressure as well as temperature. It is thought that spirits are more able to materialise when humidity levels are low and there is less natural dispersion of static electrical fields and other atmospheric energies.

Note that this type of thermometer (above) should not be used to attempt to read the air temperature. It is designed to measure the surface temperature of objects it is pointed towards. It has a cone of effect, so distance from the object affects the size of area measured.

While we regularly monitor air temperature, we don't tend to spend much time pursuing 'cold spots', as this is like chasing shadows. Most thermometers (even digital ones) respond relatively too slowly for this, and small, local fluctuations in air temperature occur naturally, moreso when people are moving around in drafty old buildings.

It is thought that entities use environmental energy, such as the warmth in the air, to materialise; therefore it goes cold when a ghost is about to appear. Well, so far we haven't heard of or found any hard evidence to support that theory. Although some of our team have experienced the feeling of icy coldness during very spooky events, we don't yet know if the effect is psychological, physiological or physical. Those things are on the 'To Find Out' list.
