"With all this bizarre and occult information, Spooked is a smashing read if you have ever fancied yourself something of an armchair Peter Venkman. The genuine accounts of experiences of the people interviewed, as well as the team's own gut churning chronicles, are suitably spine-chilling and the myth-busting information is fresh, well written and fun." "Are the dead really all around us, treading the boards of theatres, pacing the corridors of prisons, or terrifying the occupants of scary old houses? Or are ghosts just in the mind of those who think they've seen them? What is ectoplasm? And can you really photograph a ghost?

"Join New Zealand paranormal investigators Strange Occurrences as they search for the truth behind the dark stories of some of the country's most infamous haunted sites, as well as some of its lesser known ones. In their quest for clues about the nature of ghosts, the team has travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand to meet mediums, psychics, fellow paranormal investigators, a skeptic or two, a real live parapsychologist, a 'hair raiser', the long-time usher of a haunted theatre, the owners of NZ's most haunted pub, and perhaps even a ghost or two.

"They'll also tell you about the history of paranormal research, from its origins in the seance rooms of Victorian England to the TV shows of today, and show you how to unravel the mysteries of orbs and other photographic oddities. In Spooked, you'll encounter a range of beliefs, theories, a bit of history, accounts of actual paranormal investigations, creepy stories of ghostly encounters, and some pretty heavy science stuff that might just make the hinges of your brain creak apart.

"As for the truth about spooks? Well, that's for you to decide ..."

WELLINGTON EVENTS (Too late, you missed them):

  • Wellington Book Launch: Inverlochy House, Friday, 12th August, 5.30pm.

At Inverlochy, there an exhibition of paranormalia: photographs, artifacts, letters and documents with paranormal pedigree - such as a piece of wood from Borley Rectory, a letter from Harry Price, and a clay sculpture that may have been affected by poltergeist activity. Included is a display case of paranormal investigation equipment. The exhibition has been assembled by Bruce Mahalski, and will show up to 20th August 2011.

  • Seminars/discussions/talks/chinwags - call them what you will: Exploring the Paranormal with Strange Occurrences - Inverlochy House, now on Saturday 20th August, 4pm.

  • SPOOKED - A Paranormal Exhibition, at MYGALAXI Gallery, 39 Dixon St, Wellington, Saturday 13th August, from 6pm...
This exhibition has been curated by Arlo Edwards, and features artworks by Siren Deluxe, Hayden Prujean, Freeman White, D.C.Boyle, Daniel Boobyer, Rebecca Pilcher, Jonny de Painter, Thomas Murphy, et al. There is also a unique, great and mysterious installation of paranormalia, built by Arlo.

The first part of the installation is themed on the Victorian era of psychical research, with a curtained, walk in display of items and paraphernalia that might be found in the domain of a psychic medium - ectoplasmic hands, an antiqued ouija board, a levitating chair. Moving through, you come to a 1950s-styled pseudo-scientific, fantastical experimental laboratory, the sort of place mid-20th century paranormal research might have been conducted in.
